Applying Matte Liquid Lipstick // Tips & Advice

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. I, as usual, didn't get up to much. I just love lazing around too much.

Today I thought i'd do a little post on my top tips for applying matte liquid lipsticks and how I keep them looking fresh all day. I know this might seem a little weird, but honestly there's so many different formulas out there and it's taken me a while to 'perfect' the look for each one, so I thought i'd share what i've learnt with you guys.

Exfoliate your lips before you put any liquid lipstick on, this helps get rid of any dry skin you've got stuck on there and prevents that 'cakey' look. I usually do this first thing when i'm washing my face so that I know it's done and it really does make a difference.

Apply a tiny bit of lip balm before you put on your lipstick. I tend to do this before using any super matte/drying lipsticks. The colourpop ones are the most matte formulas i've ever used and they can be super drying if not applied properly. I don't really need to do this step if i'm using something like the NYX soft matte creams as they don't dry my lips out, but i'd definitely recommend doing this if you're using a super matte lipstick.

Apply a complimenting lip liner before applying any liquid lipstick. I find that this is really helpful not just for getting a defined lip shape, but it also helps when you're applying super matte lipsticks so they don't end up everywhere and you don't end up applying too much. If i'm using something which isn't that matte, I do tend to apply lip liner all over my lips before applying the lipstick as it helps it stay in place a bit longer.

Less is more. This mostly applies to super matte lipsticks. When I first used a Colourpop ultra matte lipstick I caked it on, and what a mistake that was. It ended up so uncomfortable, chunky and heavily textured, basically it was just tragic. Now i've learnt that if i'm using something that matte and drying, I literally only need a small amount and then it looks good, and still lasts a really long time.

When you're going out, try to use a straw when you drink as this helps stop your matte lipstick from transferring onto glasses and helps keep it in place. I always make sure to take a little compact mirror and some concealer out with me if i'm planning on eating, as sometimes you can get a little transfer on your chin, so just be wary of this!

So there you have it, my top tips and advice for applying and wearing matte liquid lipsticks. Personally, I don't really wear anything other than liquid lipsticks as I hate having to top up my makeup throughout the day, so these are really convenient for me as their longevity is generally amazing.

My favourite ones are definitely the Colourpop ultra matte liquid lipsticks, although if you really aren't keen on something that drying then the NYX lip lingerie formulas are amazing. The NYX soft matte lip creams are probably the least matte formulas out of everything I own, they're still a matte finish but they're very buttery and creamy.

Let me know if you enjoy matte liquid lipsticks, or do you prefer a different formula? I hope you all have an amazing rest of the week!
